Notes To Self (Love)

Johannesburg, 2022

This series began as an experiment in turning patterns of thought into patterns that could be seen, felt, smelled even.

Working in ink, each handwritten piece wrestles with questions of healing and self-care.

Working next in acrylic paint and the idea of talking with one’s hands (a personal affliction), each one-off abstract shape represents a kind of body-language – a gesture associated with the underlying text.

In this way, Notes to Self (Love) – First Drafts contains two ways of introspecting: the verbal and non-verbal.

The body be knowing, but will you be listening?

It is what it is – but what is it?

We’re saying the same words, but are we speaking the same language?

Ranging from the silly-but-stoic (“It is what it is, but what is it?”), to the haunting (“How do you face your fears when it’s your faces you fear?”), to the resolute (“Thank you, fuck you”)

– this ongoing series serves as a reminder to pay attention to our recurring thoughts, as well as our bodies’ reactions, in order to understand how we truly feel

If you don’t fux with them, why are you f-ing them?

Part mantra, part interrogation: this is a practice of tipping one’s inner world out – guts, grief, glitter and all – one millimetre at a time.

Thank you, fuck you
